How to Calculate CAGR

- Subtract 1 from the result.

CAGR Calculation Example
Suppose an investment starts at USD 10,000 and grows to USD 20,000 over 5 years.

CAGR = (20,000 ÷ 10,000)1 ÷ 5 − 1
First, divide the ending value by the beginning value:
20,000 ÷ 10,000 = 2
Then calculate the fifth root of 2 and subtract 1:

Total growth and CAGR measure different things.

CAGR tells you the annualized compounded growth rate over that period.

The percentage growth can be calculated as:
Total Growth Percentage = [(Ending Value − Beginning Value) ÷ Beginning Value] × 100
For example, if an investment grows from USD 10,000 to USD 20,000, its total growth is USD 10,000 and its total percentage growth is 100%.
However, if that growth occurs over five years, the CAGR is approximately 14.87%. This illustrates why total growth and annualized growth should not be treated as the same measurement.
CAGR Example With Business Revenue
CAGR is not limited to investments. It can also be used to measure business growth.
Suppose a company's annual revenue increases from USD 500,000 to USD 800,000 over four years.
The CAGR can be calculated as:
CAGR = (800,000 ÷ 500,000)1 ÷ 4 − 1
The result is approximately:
CAGR ≈ 12.47%
This means the revenue increased at an equivalent compounded annual growth rate of approximately 12.47% over the four-year period.

The result is approximately -5.44%.
A negative CAGR indicates that the value declined on an annualized basis over the selected period.
Can CAGR Be Used for Less Than One Year?

For example, if the period is six months, the number of years can be represented as 0.5 years. However, for very short periods, other performance measures may sometimes be more appropriate depending on the purpose of the analysis.
What Is the Difference Between CAGR and Average Annual Return?
CAGR and average annual return are not necessarily the same.
CAGR uses the beginning value, ending value, and total time period to calculate a compounded annualized rate. It effectively assumes that the growth can be represented by one constant compounded rate.
An arithmetic average annual return, on the other hand, can be calculated by adding individual annual returns and dividing by the number of years.
Because investment returns can vary significantly from year to year, the arithmetic average and CAGR can produce different results.
CAGR vs. Annual Growth Rate
An annual growth rate describes the growth during a particular year, while CAGR summarizes growth across an entire period.
For example, a company could grow by 10% in one year, 20% in another year, and 5% in a third year. These are individual annual growth rates.
CAGR would combine the beginning and ending values over the full period and provide one annualized compounded rate.
Limitations of CAGR
Although CAGR is useful, it does not tell the entire story about growth or investment performance.
CAGR does not show the volatility that occurred between the beginning and ending dates. Two investments could have the same CAGR while having very different performance paths.
For example, one investment might grow steadily each year, while another might experience a large decline followed by a strong recovery. If both finish at the same ending value, their CAGRs can be identical even though the risk and experience of holding them were very different.
CAGR also does not account for deposits, withdrawals, dividends, taxes, fees, or other cash flows unless those factors are incorporated into the values being analyzed.

CAGR is particularly useful when comparing growth over a period of several years and you want a simple annualized measure.

It does not necessarily mean that the value increased by exactly 8% in every individual year.
